Controls, wiring, diagnostics

Reference tools and learning resources for competent professionals working on domestic heating controls and electrical fault diagnosis.

Who it's for

Most gas qualifications test safe isolation. Wiring and diagnosing the controls themselves is often left to a separate short course, or to experience. Heating Decoded is aimed at that gap.

  • Competent domestic heating engineers
  • Qualified gas engineers working on heating controls
  • Electricians with relevant competence
  • Heating supervisors and technical managers
  • Training centres and colleges
  • Other suitably competent professionals

Not a DIY guide

Heating Decoded isn't a DIY repair service. It's written for people who are trained and competent to work on heating controls and mains electrics.

A method, not a pile of diagrams

  1. Know the sequence

Start with what the system is meant to do, in order, when there's a call for heat.

  2. Read the wiring

Interpret the control arrangement in front of you, not the one you expected to find.

  3. Expect the behaviour

Know what each control should be doing at each stage, so the odd one out stands out.

  4. Test safely

Apply safe isolation and the right electrical tests before you touch a terminal.

  5. Read the result

Understand what a reading tells you, and just as importantly what it doesn't.

  6. Move on logically

Let each result decide the next step, rather than swapping parts and hoping.

Four tiles, four parts of the job

The Heating Decoded symbol stands for electricity, resistance, water and heat. Pick a tile to see the planned topics that sit under it.

Electricity

The supply and the switching: where the power comes from and what's controlling it.

  • Electrical controls and components
  • Safe isolation principles
  • Electrical testing principles

Planned topics. They may change before release.

Resistance

Measuring what's really there, and knowing what the reading means.

  • Resistance testing
  • Continuity testing
  • Understanding diagnostic results

Planned topics. They may change before release.

Water

The system itself: how heating and hot water are zoned and controlled.

  • S-Plan, Y-Plan and S-Plan Plus systems
  • Approved wiring diagrams
  • Quick-reference information

Planned topics. They may change before release.

Heat

The result: a boiler that fires when it should, and only then.

  • Interactive Fault Atlas
  • OpenTherm and modern control systems
  • Structured fault investigation

Planned topics. They may change before release.

Heating Decoded Part Finder

In development

A separate companion app for identifying heating controls and components, with ControlSwap built in to help pin down the programmer or control already on the wall.

About Part Finder

Read this before you use any technical content

Heating Decoded is for competent professionals. It doesn't replace manufacturer instructions, BS 7671, the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, safe working procedures or your own professional judgement. Isolate and prove dead before you work on any circuit, and follow the instructions for the specific product in front of you.

Questions people ask

Is Heating Decoded available yet?

Not yet. The app and Part Finder are in development and the manual is coming soon. Nothing is on sale and there are no app store listings. When there are, they'll be linked from this page.

How much will it cost?

Prices haven't been confirmed. We'll publish them here once they're agreed, and not before.

Can I use it for DIY repairs?

No. Heating Decoded is written for competent professionals who are trained to work on heating controls and mains electrics. It isn't a DIY repair guide.

Will there be a PDF of the manual?

No. The manual is a printed book and no PDF version is planned.

Does Part Finder check stock or prices?

No. It helps you identify products and can link to selected merchant pages, but it doesn't check live stock and doesn't guarantee prices or availability.

Is Heating Decoded endorsed by any manufacturer?

No. Heating Decoded is independent. Where it names a manufacturer or a product, that's to help you identify it, not a sign of endorsement or partnership.

Can colleges and training centres get it?

We'd like to support colleges and training centres. If you run one, get in touch and tell us what you need. We'll come back to you when ordering details are ready.
