The Heating Decoded app

In development. A diagnostic and learning app for heating controls, for engineers who want to know why a system is misbehaving.

What the app is for

When a heating system won't behave, the fault is often in the controls.

A zone valve that hasn't opened. A programmer swapped for one that's wired differently. A supply that isn't where it should be. The app is being built to help you work through problems like these in order, starting from how the system is meant to run.

It pairs quick reference for when you're on site with deeper learning for when you're not.

What's planned for the app

  • Interactive Fault Atlas. Choose the system you're working on, then the symptom, and follow a structured path through the likely causes.
  • S-Plan, Y-Plan and S-Plan Plus. Learning and reference material for the control systems UK engineers meet most often.
  • Wiring diagrams. Approved diagrams only, shown as drawn. Nothing redrawn or simplified to fit a screen.
  • Electrical controls and components. What each part does, how it's connected and how it behaves when it's working.
  • Safe isolation and electrical testing. The principles, as they apply to heating controls.
  • Resistance and continuity testing. How to test, and how to read what the meter tells you.
  • OpenTherm and modern controls. Where modulating and smart controls differ from a traditional on/off arrangement.
  • Quick reference. Key information you can find in seconds when you're stood in front of the cylinder.
  • Search. Searchable technical content, so you don't need to know which section something lives in.
  • Linked to the manual. Diagnostic information links through to the matching parts of the manual.

This is planned content. Features may change before release.

The app and Part Finder are separate

The app is about understanding and diagnosing a system. Part Finder is about identifying and locating the products in it. They're designed to work alongside each other, but they're separate apps with their own commercial arrangements.

About Part Finder

Screenshots and pricing

Screenshots will be added once they can be taken from a tested build, and prices once they're confirmed. Until then, read everything on this page as planned rather than finished.

Questions people ask

When will the app be released?

There's no release date yet. It'll be released once it has been built, tested and approved.

Which phones will it run on?

The app is being prepared for both the Apple App Store and Google Play. Store links will be added here when the listings exist.

How much will it cost?

Pricing hasn't been confirmed. We won't publish a price or take any payment until it has been agreed.

Does it replace training or manufacturer instructions?

No. It's a learning and reference tool for people who are already competent to do the work. Manufacturer instructions, the regulations and safe working practice always come first.

Will it include Part Finder?

No. Part Finder is a separate companion app, and its commercial arrangements are being worked out separately.
